Solution 1- Transfer the company file back to its default location
QBDT displays this error message when the company file cannot be found in its default location on your system. This mostly happens when you move the company file to a new location, and the changes aren’t updated in QuickBooks. This’ll create problems when you try opening the company file, and the software might crash or freeze. You need to move the company file back to its default location to ensure the error doesn’t develop again in the future-
Click on the search panel and type the initials of your data file with a ‘*’ in the front to search precisely.
Go to the data file’s location from the search results and right-click the file.
Click Copy and go to C:\ProgramFiles\Users\UserName\Intuit\QuickBooksXX\CompanyFiles.
Right-click on an empty space and select Paste to move the company file.
Open QuickBooks and try accessing the data file again.
If the error message appears again and the file fails to open, move to the next solution.
